Grand Opening of Stowe Mountain Club a Tremendous Success
Stowe Mountain Club Debuted With Grand Opening Event on July 21
A New Golf Course Worthy of the 'Stowe' Name Helps Transform a Legendary Ski Resort to a Four-Season Destination
STOWE, VERMONT, July 21, 2007 - It was a perfect summer's day in a flawless setting for an extraordinary round of golf on New England's newest and most unique new course. Only a few scenic clouds loomed over Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak in Stowe, with arid mountain air and temps holding steady in the low 70's all day, the Grand Opening of Stowe Mountain Club was heralded as a tremendous success. The event was attended by 287 owners, members, family and guests. Of those, 88 golfers played a magnificent round of golf. Others chose from a plethora of group activities that included kayaking and fly-fishing on Peregrine Lake, the new body of water that flanks holes 14, 15 and 18.
"The entire day was an overwhelming success. Our members enjoyed a sample of mountain activities in the morning followed by a truly memorable round of golf at Stowe Mountain Club. What a proud moment for the entire Spruce Peak team and everyone at AIG," said Dave Bennett, Director of Golf for Stowe Mountain Club.
Created by renowned golf course designer Bob Cupp, the 18-hole, par 72 "wilderness" course winds dramatically along the lower reaches of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, to an elevation of more than 1800 feet. The course affords stunning views of the mountains, Stowe Mountain Resort and the Little River Valley below. The resort course is available to Stowe Mountain Club members, as well as guests of the extraordinary new Stowe Mountain Lodge, a luxury resort hotel being built at the base of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak and set to open Winter 2007/2008.
Stowe Mountain Club is a four-season private club with unprecedented golf, alpine and spa facilities located at Spruce Peak at Stowe, Vermont's newest luxury resort and residential community. All residential owners at Spruce Peak, including owners of the Front Four residences at Stowe Mountain Lodge, are eligible to join Stowe Mountain Club.
Stowe Mountain Club was designed as an extremely environmentally conscious project, and is the first in Vermont to achieve Audubon Signature Sanctuary Certification from Audubon International. The golf course, for instance, is surrounded by 2,000 protected acres of pristine land. No homes were built along the course, affording a remarkably natural golfing experience, and allowing for protected habitat within the surrounding woodlands. Another centerpiece of this environmental effort is state-of-the-art course irrigation, recycled water from the man-made Peregrine Lake, which also serves as the source of snowmaking water for Stowe Mountain Resort.
Course designer Bob Cupp commented, "Once every few decades, a spectacular sight for golf appears. Such is the case at the foot of Mount Mansfield in Stowe, Vermont. This land provides a feeling of grandeur in the long views, and yet certain coziness within the engulfing cradle of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. It provides members and guests with unforgettable golf in the hills of Vermont." The proud designer went on to add, "There may be no finer collection of great short par fours anywhere in America."
Additional course amenities include a 6,500 square-foot practice green and chipping area, built to USGA specifications, as well as a Golf Cottage, hosting a pro shop, dining and lounge and terrace. Complimentary bag storage and locker facilities are available to club members and resort guests. The course is overseen by Walter Frame, Director of Operations, Stowe Mountain Club and David Bennett, PGA, Director of Golf, Stowe Mountain Club.
