Ski Patrol
So you want to be a ski patroller....
The Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol (MMSP) at Stowe Mountain Resort is a State of Vermont licensed first responder service. The MMSP is the largest squad in Vermont district #4 (Lamoille County). As a first responder service, we log the most EMS incidents in the area.
The required entry-level certification for ski patroller is Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT- B). Applicants without entry-level medical certification may be able to arrange for training through MMSP, depending on previous experiences, and are still encouraged to apply.
Communicating with and assisting injured guests are our highest priorities. Great customer service and the ability to communicate well with others are mandatory. Patrol requires that members be both physically and mentally versatile. Accidents can run the full range of medical and trauma possibilities, while in an environment that can be both technically difficult and demanding. Team relationship skills, strong skiing/ riding abilities and outdoor experiences are a must for mountain rescuers.
A typical day starts between 7:00 and 8:00 am, depending on where you are assigned to work, and ends around 5:00 pm. Throughout their work day patrollers are required to check ski trails and maintain awareness devices - expect to do physical labor. Work details such as digging out tower pads, handling bundles of bamboo and moving snowmaking equipment are a daily chore. Training and chores will fill your rookie year.
Some of your time will be spent on the training required to maintain MMSP standards and the requirements of the Vermont Department of Health. All patrollers are encouraged to further their own development.
Lastly, we all love to ski and we ski at Stowe because it has some of the world's best terrain. Know why you want to be here and share it with others. Joining ski patrol means joining a team and a family. Only those with a willingness to contribute and a desire to be a part of something lasting tend to stay. MMSP is the oldest ski patrol in North America and a sense of duty comes with our history.
We will have several opening for the 2008/2009 Season. If you are interested, please click here and tell us a bit about yourself. If you have what we're looking for, we'll get back to you ASAP and let you know about taking the next step.
